Today your child is coming home with five papers for you to sign and return to school.
One is a yellow Parent-Teacher Conference invitation.  The days and times are the same as the fall. They should coordinate with any siblings in the building. If a translator is needed, please indicate that on the form, and we will do our best to accommodate your request.
The other four papers are Student Summary Grading Reports. The reports show their current progress in each subject area and what their report card would say if it was printed today.
Please sign all five papers and return them to school as soon as possible.  Thank you for your help.

Social Studies Projects

We have been working on our end of unit Native American Triorama Projects.

They are due Tuesday, Dec. 12th.

Please note that the 3-D object is to be completed at home.  I have limited art supplies that students can use.  They just need to ask and see if I have something they can use.

Here are a few due dates to keep an eye on.

Project Objective:  to create a 3-D display that illustrates and explains 1) the climate, 2) the type of land they lived on, 3) the food they ate, 4) the various shelters they had, 5) the clothing they wore, and 5) some of the customs or cultural beliefs they practiced.

1.  Select one of the Native American people groups from Unit 1 p. 17-45

     *Due on Mon. 12/4

2. Write an explanation describing what a day of life in your people group was like.

*Assigned and written on Tues. & Wed. 12/5 & 12/6; Due Thurs. 12/7

3.  Illustrate the backdrop of the triorama.

     *Sketch on 12/6 - 12/8; Due Monday 12/11

4. Create a 3-D object to display in the triorama.

*Assigned for an AT-HOME ACTIVITY; Due Tues. 12/12

Object must be homemade.  It must relate to the people group (i.e. a travois

for the Plains.)  You may use paper, card stock, foam, clay, etc.  Real items,

like sticks and pebbles, may also be included.  Be creative!  DO NOT GO

Please let me know if you have any questions.

All 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade girls who are interested in being a part of the year's Girls on the Run program are invited to a meeting tonight at 6:30pm.
The meeting will be in Ms. Thompson's room.  She will be coaching again this year with Ms. Smalley.
If you are unsure or just want to find out more information, plan to attend.
It is a wonderful program for our girls and registration online begins on Dec. 1st.
If you have any further questions, please email Ms. Thompson.

Just a reminder:
Wednesday, 11/29/17 is our Santaland shopping day.
Both 5th grade classes will be shopping after lunch.
If your child chooses to shop, they do not need the official envelope, but they do need to have a list of who to shop for and money.
Thanks for your help.

ART PRIZE 2017-18

Thank you to those who have already volunteered to attend and chaperone on this Field Trip.  It is appreciated.
We are going on Wednesday, Sept 27.  The bus will be leaving school by 8:30, and will return to school around 2:15.  We will only have room for a few parents on the bus, so the others will have to drive separately.  With us going first thing in the morning, parking should be available at the Ford Museum.  Parents are encouraged to meet at school and then car pool together.
All parents attending must fill out a volunteer form.  These must be updated every year.  Along with the form, a copy of both sides of your drivers license is also required.  You can stop in the office and have Mrs. Boom make a copy, or you could take a picture with your phone and send it to me to print off.  I need to have these in by Thursday of this week (9/21) to allow time for processing.  Thanks in advance for your help with this.
We are looking forward to a great day.  If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Weekly News 9-15-17

Happy Beautiful "Summer" Weekend! I hope you get outside with family for at least some of the gorgeous forecast ahead!  (***My weekend homework is always to get outside and have fun! We work very hard during the week and deserve it!
A few things to keep in mind as we work to stay organized in 5th grade.
Binders:  these need to be taken home every night!  Inside are all necessary papers and the Agenda/Planner.  Students know about the "To Do/Homework" on the left side and the "Done/Keep" on the right side.  Please assist them in using these pockets in order to be most successful in fifth grade.  Papers should only be taken out with approval from one of us.  When in doubt, have them ask.  You would be surprised how many times the blame goes to the parents because they "threw it away" :)
Agendas/Planners:  These are filled out daily. All homework is to be circled. Parents are to initial or sign it daily.  ALL homework is DUE THE NEXT DAY unless it notes an alternate day.  For example, Social Studies this week has been a Study Guide due Tues. 9/19.  Students need to complete the guide by Tuesday, not the next day.  ***Please subscribe to the Agenda online to receive it via email.  Go to our East Elementary web page, Staff Directory, Teacher name, 5th grade class.
Social Studies:  We have seven units of study this year. Each unit has a unit test.  The first one is Geography. The test is next Wed. 9/20.   Study Guides are to be studied and memorized. They will not be used on the test.
Reading Logs: These are handed out each Monday. Students are to read 20 minutes a night and write a reflection.  Logs are due every Friday.  If they do not have the green log, please fill out your own version on lined paper rather than take a zero.
*Monday 9/18 - Pizza Hut Fundraiser 11:00am-11:00pm; Constitution Day = wear red, white, and blue.  **Return any and all PTC discount cards.
*Wednesday 9/20 - School Picture Day; Geography Test
*Friday 9/22 - 1/2 day for students.
*Field Trip to ART PRIZE (parents needed!!!) on Wed. 9/27.
*Bike Trip to JOHN BALL ZOO (parents needed!!!) on Wed. Oct. 11
*PTC Labels and Box tops Collection on or before Oct. 31.
Thank you for helping your student with these items.
As always, if you have any questions, please let us know.
Mrs. Mercer
Mr. Merritt

Memo 8-28-17

Good Afternoon Parents,

We wanted to remind you that the East Elementary Open House is tomorrow night (Tuesday) from 6-7 PM.  With open house taking place after school has started, we are looking to try something a little different.  We will be having an informational meeting from 6:20- 6:40pm to go over what we are calling "A Crash Course for 5th Grade."  We will go over some of the expectations and procedures that we will utilize in 5th grade this year.
If you are able to make it during this time, that would be great!  Otherwise, we will still be having the "normal" meet and greet style open house from 6:00-6:20, and again 6:40-7:00. Please stop in and introduce yourself. If you are unable to attend, we will send home a packet for you to read.
We are looking forward to a great year!  As always, let us know if you have any questions.
Mrs. Mercer and Mr. Merritt
